Our Division of Impacts on Agriculture, Forests and Ecosystem Services (IAFES) is looking for up two researchers responsible of the development of new modules and methods for modelling ecosystem dynamics and productivity and the effect of climate extremes and disturbances on carbon-water and nutrient cycles. Contribution to project deliverables, datasets and scientific publications, is also expected.ABOUT US

We are now embarking on a new chapter of our journey that will further boost CMCC’s global position in climate change research…Together!To learn more about this opportunity and submit your application, please refer to the following:ROLEThe researcher is responsible for the development of new methods for the modelling the effect of climate extremes and disturbances (e.g. deforestation, fires) on carbon cycle.RESPONSIBILITIESThe researcher will support the IAFES team, with:

  • The modelling of the effect of climate- and human-induced disturbances (i.e. drought, heat waves, fires) on ecosystem processes and productivity.
  • The fine-tuning of multiple land surface models to advance the current knowledge of carbon cycle at global scales.
  • The development of new modules for carbon stocks soil and biomass allocation and nutrient cycles.
  • The testing and evaluation of the multiple Earth observation data across different regions where carbon cycle is still uncertain.

REQUIREMENTS

  • PhD in climate science, ecology, geography, physics or equivalent subjects (mandatory).
  • Master’s degree in environmental sciences or equivalent subjects.
  • Minimum of two or five years of work experience in carbon cycle modelling after the conclusion of the PhD is requested (mandatory).
  • Knowledge of vegetation dynamics and carbon stocks from observations and models.
  • Excellent knowledge in modelling photosynthesis, ecosystem dynamics, disturbances (i.e. fires, deforestation) using satellite products (e.g. Solar Induced Florescence (SIF)).
  • Excellent knowledge of modelling biomass and changes in carbon stocks using remote sensing data (e.g. Vertical Optical Depth (VOD), SIF, Lidar).
  • Excellent programming skills in Fortran and Phyton.
  • Very good knowledge of the English language.
  • Strong knowledge of statistics and data science.

DURATION, COMPENSATION & BENEFITS

  • Please note that this opportunity will be issued both internally and externally.
  • The researcher will be based in Viterbo CMCC office, with possibility of remote working.
  • The appointment period will be initially of 12 months starting from 1st August 2025 and renewable for additional months pending a positive evaluation.
  • Flexible working time as per internal policies.
  • Support during the immigration process, if needed.
  • Contract and gross annual salary will be based on qualifications and working experience
