Description du poste : The Collegiate Handball Coach is responsible for recruiting talented student-athletes, developing and implementing training programs, and overseeing all coaching and administrative functions related to the sport. This role requires a caring, student-focused individual with a deep understanding of coaching tactics, team management, and athletic recruitment. The coach will play a crucial role in the holistic development of student-athletes, ensuring their academic and personal growth alongside their athletic performance. A strong focus on student success, retention, and graduation is essential.
Typical Duties/Job Duties * Recruitment: Develop and execute a comprehensive recruitment plan to attract top-tier student-athletes. Identify and recruit talented student-athletes by assessing their athletic ability and academic performance. Build and maintain relationships with high school coaches, handball clubs in Texas and beyond, and prospective students.
- Training and Development: Create and maintain a detailed training schedule that includes practice sessions, fitness programs, and game strategies. Plan, organize, and conduct regular practice sessions to improve the team’s performance. Develop game strategies and teach athletic techniques that will help the team succeed in competitions.
- Game Management: Ensure that all athletes adhere to the rules of the sport and the academic standards set by the college or university. Monitor the academic progress of student-athletes and provide necessary support. Organize and oversee all aspects of team travel, game scheduling, and participation in tournaments.
- Performance Assessment: Assess the performance of individual athletes and the team as a whole, providing feedback for improvement. Offer emotional support and guidance to student-athletes. Provide regular performance reports for individual athletes and the team, highlighting areas of improvement and success.
- Administrative Duties: Coordinate with student affairs staff and others for scheduling games, organizing travel, and managing budgets. Manage the budget for the Handball program, ensuring efficient use of resources for travel, equipment, and other expenses. Keep up-to-date with changes in rules and regulations of the sport.
- Safety and Compliance: Develop fitness and safety programs to minimize accidents and injuries. Follow university protocols for injuries and assist with university-held or required physical testing prior to camps or performances. Ensure all athletes meet academic standards and adhere to safety protocols. Maintain documentation of compliance with university and sport regulations.
- Community Engagement: Provide community involvement activities for handball student-athletes to facilitate student-athlete growth, community support, and interaction between local youth and handball student-athletes. Positively represent handball and the university in the community, area, state, and nationally.
- Fundraising: Assist with fundraising activities for the handball program as assigned by the Vice President for Student Affairs or other university administrators.
- Student Success and Retention: Utilize predictive analytics and early alert systems to identify at-risk student-athletes. Provide intrusive coaching and referrals to internal and external resources to support their academic and personal success. Implement programs and strategies to support student-athlete retention and graduation. Monitor academic progress and provide necessary interventions.
- Academic Advising: Collaborate with academic advisors to ensure student-athletes are making progress toward their degrees. Monitor changes in academic policy and communicate these to student-athletes.
- Case Management: Oversee case management services for student-athletes with at-risk mental health and social support needs through interventions, referrals, and active follow-up. Maintain records of interventions, referrals, and follow-ups for student-athletes with at-risk mental health and social support needs.
- Course Instruction: Teach one to four sections of the 1-credit physical activities handball class. Typically, 2-3 course sections in each of the Fall and Spring semesters.
Knowledge, Skills and Abilities
- Proven experience in coaching Handball at the collegiate level.
- Strong understanding of athletic recruitment and team management.
- Excellent communication and interpersonal skills.
- Ability to work collaboratively with athletic directors, sports staff, and student-athletes.
Minimum Qualifications
- Bachelor’s degree in Sports Management, Physical Education, or a related field.
- Certifications in CPR, AED, and First Aid are preferred.
Preferred Qualifications
- Master’s degree
- Experience in academic advising, student retention programs, or related work preferred.
- United States Handball Association (USHA) Certified Instructor (Valid)
- Successful, certified completion of International Handball Federation (IHF) Coaching Courses
