We are New Zealand’s leading natural resources and environmental science services provider to public and private sector customers.To meet the increase in demand from the public and industry for our short, medium and long- forecasting services, we are looking for a meteorologist to join our busy team and lead the preparation, delivery, and communication of our sub-seasonal to seasonal (S2S) forecasts.The key purpose of this position is to lead the provision of high-quality S2S, and weather forecast information to various end users, including New Zealand and international media, key industry sectors (e.g., energy and agriculture) as well contributing to the creation and/or improvement of forecasting tools and products. Key responsibilities include leading the production of forecasts/outlooks and communicating them through a range of media, including live or web-based presentations and social media and developing forecast products and tools needed to deliver to clients, using scientific code where appropriate. The position will also provide the opportunity to contribute to the development, delivery, and communication of environmental forecasting/science services and products for weather and climate-sensitive clients, particularly in the emergency services, government, agricultural, and commercial sectors.To be successful in this position you will have strong background in S2S forecasting, as well as the ability to apply knowledge of global climate drivers and their relevance to Aotearoa New Zealand and the Southwest Pacific. The ideal candidate will be able to effectively and seamlessly operate throughout the weather, sub-seasonal, and climate forecast continuum, as well as possess exceptional communication skills and advanced knowledge of the latest meteorology and S2S forecasting techniques. As an experienced professional in this field, you will have a bachelor’s degree in mathematics, physics or atmospheric science, and/or equivalent experience in a relevant aspect of engineering or environmental science, along with a qualification and/or training in weather forecasting. In addition, candidates with any of the following skills and experience will have an advantage:
- A comprehensive knowledge of New Zealand meteorology and climate (including atmosphere, hydrosphere and marine environments) and climate outlook science;
- Experience in computer programming languages such as Python or R, particularly in relation to the parsing and analysis of meteorological or climatological datasets.
