Contexte et enjeux

Les systèmes de gestion des eaux pluviales sont confrontés à des pressions croissantes dues à la dégradation des infrastructures, à l’urbanisation et aux changements climatiques. En Norvège, les prévisions indiquent une augmentation de l’intensité et de la fréquence des précipitations, ce qui accentue les risques d’inondation et de pollution des eaux. Il est impératif de concevoir des solutions robustes qui intègrent des technologies modernes et des pratiques durables.

Axes de recherche

La recherche proposée mettra un accent particulier sur :

  • Modélisation des systèmes : Développement de modèles d’apprentissage automatique pour prédire la réponse des systèmes d’eaux pluviales face à divers scénarios climatiques.
  • Optimisation multicritère : Analyse des compromis entre réduction des risques d’inondation, bénéfices environnementaux et coût.

Compétences requises

Les candidats doivent posséder :

  • Un Master en ingénierie civile, génie de l’eau, hydrologie ou dans un domaine connexe.
  • Une maîtrise de l’anglais, tant écrit qu’oral, et des compétences en programmation (Python, R, MATLAB).
  • Des connaissances solides en hydrologie urbaine, ainsi qu’une expérience en modélisation hydraulique.

Rémunération et conditions

Urban stormwater systems are increasingly under pressure from climate change, urban densification, and aging infrastructure. Conventional drainage networks are not designed to cope with the frequency and intensity of extreme weather events predicted under future climate scenarios, leading to growing risks of urban flooding, water pollution, and infrastructure damage. This is a particularly urgent concern in Nordic countries such as Norway, where climate projections indicate more intense rainfall and wetter conditions in many cities. There is a pressing need to develop adaptive, robust, and resilient solutions for stormwater management that leverage modern technologies and sustainable practices.This PhD position offers a unique opportunity to advance urban stormwater engineering through data-driven and nature-based approaches, including Low Impact Development (LID) practices (e.g., green roofs, rain gardens), with a specific focus on urban catchments. The research will place a strong emphasis on machine learning, optimization techniques, and climate change scenario analysis. The successful candidate will contribute to the development of intelligent models and decision-support tools that enhance the performance, resilience, and sustainability of stormwater management.The research will focus on integrating AI and machine learning with hydraulic-hydrologic modeling, urban planning strategies, and nature-based infrastructure to better predict and manage stormwater dynamics under climate-related uncertainty. It will also explore how to optimize design and operation strategies to adapt to future climate extremes.Possible areas of research include:

  • Developing machine learning models as surrogate models for predicting flooding and stormwater system responses under various nature-based solution (NBS) configurations and climate scenarios.
  • Using hydrologic and hydraulic simulations to generate training data and assess stormwater system performance under future climate conditions.
  • Designing and applying multi-objective optimization techniques to explore trade-offs among flood risk reduction, environmental co-benefits, cost-efficiency, and land use.
  • Assessing the resilience and adaptability of nature-based (blue-green) and hybrid (gray-green) stormwater solutions.
  • Integrating uncertainty analysis and multi-criteria decision-making to support long-term planning and scenario evaluation.
  • Collaborating with utilities to apply and validate the developed models using real-world case studies and data.

The research plan will be tailored based on the candidate’s background in flood management, data science, environmental modeling, and systems optimization. The candidate will work actively as part of the . This position offers the opportunity to advance innovative, data-driven, and nature-based stormwater management strategies that enhance urban resilience, reduce flood risks, and promote sustainable adaptation to climate change in Nordic cities.The successful candidate will also have access to the faculty’s advanced resources in water and environmental engineering, as well as expertise in artificial intelligence.
