Description du poste

📝 Description du poste : Department of Plant and Environmental Sciences invites applicants for a PhD fellowship in Biochars for Environmental Remediation. The project is made available through the Sino-Danish University (SDC) – Water and Environment. The project is a shared project with 2 years of research at University of Copenhagen and 1 year of research at University of Chinese Academy of Sciences (UCAS), with location at Research Center of Ecoenvironmental Research in Beijing.Start date is expected to be 15 October 2025 or as soon as possible thereafter. The project
Biochars produced by pyrolysis of biosubstrates and -wastes have many potential environmental applications including soil and water cleaning. Biochars may substitute activated carbon. Biochar properties are highly diverse depending on substrates, pyrolysis, activation and other modifications. Biochars are not only good sorbents, but they also serve as catalysts for both reductive and oxidative pollutant transformations. In this project we focus on granular biochars for use in filter applications and thus with main focus on biochars for cleaning polluted waters. Iron rich high-temperature biochars will deserve particular attention. Inorganic porous host materials for biochar formation may also be included. This PhD project comprise three parts: i) Fabrication and solid-state characterization of porous iron containing materials with biochars as the primary host material, ii) Laboratory investigations of the solid-solution interactions and reactivity of the materials for diverse inorganic and organic pollutants aiming at mechanistic understanding, and iii) Field or semi field testing of the materials using column filters.Who are we looking for?
We are looking for candidates within the field(s) of environmental chemistry, geochemistry and materials science. Applicants can have a background in different fields of chemistry, soil and water chemistry, and environmental engineering. Candidates should demonstrate experience with prior experimental and laboratory work including instrumental analyses. Prior experience with characterization and/or reactivity of environmental materials will be an advantage. Our group and research – and what do we offer?
The Environmental Chemistry Group is a part of Department of Plant and Environmental Sciences, Faculty of Science, University of Copenhagen. We are located at Frederiksberg in Copenhagen. The group comprise 4 full time professors/associate professors, 2 post docs, 7 PhD students, 2 scientific assistants, 2 lab techs and a number of guest researchers. Our current work focus on environmental fate of soil and water contaminants, new materials for environmental applications, remediation of soil and water, and resource recycling. We aim for improved understanding of reactions at the solid-solution interfaces as a basis for most of our work with applications. We offer creative and stimulating working conditions in dynamic and international research environment. Our research facilities include modern laboratories for analysis of both liquid and solid phase.Principal supervisor is Professor Hans Christian Bruun Hansen, Department of Plant and Environmental Sciences, E-mail: , Direct Phone: +45 24942607.Co-supervisor is Professor Peter E.
