This role focuses on leading urban design projects that align with a strategic architectural vision and contribute to the creation of integrated, sustainable environments. The Senior Urban Designer will develop masterplans, frameworks, and spatial development plans in collaboration with multidisciplinary teams, driving innovation and excellence in urban design practice.
Ideal for experienced professionals with a passion for urban systems, place-making, and spatial justice, this position offers a platform to influence urban change through creative and context-sensitive design interventions.
Key Responsibilities
- Lead urban design projects from concept development to final design reports.
- Develop integrated masterplans and urban frameworks in collaboration with internal and external teams.
- Translate urban challenges into innovative and practical design solutions.
- Engage with clients, municipalities, and stakeholders to advance spatial development strategies.
- Prepare compelling design reports, visualizations, presentations, and analytical mappings.
- Uphold standards of design excellence, contextual relevance, and sustainability.
- Contribute to the strategic vision of urban interventions in line with broader architectural goals.
- Mentor junior designers and foster a collaborative, high-performance studio culture.
Experience
- Minimum 5 years of post-graduate experience in urban design.
- Demonstrated experience in leading and delivering urban design projects.
- Strong portfolio showcasing masterplans, urban frameworks, and visual narratives.
Skills & Attributes
- Strong graphic, illustrative, and communication skills.
- Proficient in AutoCAD, SketchUp, Adobe Suite, and Microsoft Office.
- Capable of writing strategic design reports and conducting analytical mapping.
- Self-motivated, detail-oriented, and organized.
- Effective leadership and interpersonal skills.
- Passionate about place-making, sustainability, and spatial equity.
- Ability to mentor and inspire junior team members.
- GIS, Rhino, or parametric software proficiency (advantageous).
Educational Requirements
- Postgraduate qualification in Urban Design or Architecture with an urban design focus.
- SACAP or UDISA registration (advantageous).
