Trades are the heart and hands of Building Operations. The Trades units provide a wide range of services for the maintenance, repair and operation of all buildings on campus.Building Operations Steamfitters perform skilled steam fitting/pipefitting work at the journeyperson level in the planning, layout, assembly, installation, maintenance, repair and renovation work of building steam and hot water heating systems, chilled water systems, high and low pressure steam lines and equipment throughout the University.Organizational StatusSteamfitters report to the Mechanical Trades Manager. Steamfitters work both independently as well as with other Steamfitters and associated tradespeople, both at the apprentice and journeyperson level. Steamfitters receive daily work assignments and directions from the Head Steamfitter as well as the Sub Head Steamfitter.Work PerformedPerforms maintenance, repair and renovation work such as:– Building heating and cooling piping systems, including associated components such as: heat exchangers, coils, steam traps, valves, strainers, radiation elements, backflow prevention devices.– Handling of asbestos or other hazardous insulation materials.– Maintaining and installing underground piping and associated fittings.– Carrying out inspection tests.– Diagnosing defects on equipment, taking remedial action as required or recommending solution to supervision verbally or written.Assists in the preparation of job estimates defining required resources and materials.Works from oral and written instructions, work orders, service requests and drawings.Assembles parts, equipment, fittings and joins them by soldering, brazing, gluing, screwing, caulking, bolting and other methods.Works in accordance with all safety standards, practices, procedures and ensures personal protective equipment is used where required.Responds to service requests and emergencies immediately during normal working hours and after working hours in a safe efficient manner. Ensures all tools, equipment and instruments required for work are safely utilized and appropriately stored..Ensures good housekeeping is practiced in the steamfitting shop and on site.Is responsible for work being completed in accordance with job requirements and specifications.This position is expected to keep current with preventative maintenance concepts, technology, and theory and to be familiar with manufacturer and regulatory maintenance requirements.Consequence of Error/JudgementWork is performed within prescribed and accepted trade standards, in accordance with job requirements and specifications and external regulatory requirements; inappropriate repair/maintenance decisions could delay resolution of problems and adversely affect users of equipment/system and possible safety of users and the general public.Supervision ReceivedSteamfitters work under the general supervision of the Head and Sub Head Steamfitter. Steamfitters are required to develop appropriate work procedures and methods of problem solving. Steamfitters receive specific instructions only on unusual problems and are required to develop appropriate work procedures.Supervision GivenSteamfitters monitor and check the work of apprentice(s) or labourers as the need arises.Minimum Qualifications– A trade certification to journeyperson level as a Steamfitter

– Demonstrates a commitment to enhancing one’s own awareness, knowledge, and skills related to equity, diversity, and inclusionPreferred QualificationsValid BC Gas Fitter B License with electrical endorsement for low voltage, BC Cross Connection Control certificate and Valid BC Drivers License. BC Gas Fitter A License is preferred. Minimum 5 years of related experience. A working knowledge of relevant industrial safety regulations and building codes. Ability to interpret drawings, specification, and information contained in maintenance manuals. Ability to produce accurate isometric sketches that demonstrate existing conditions, proposed installation, repairs and alterations. Effective oral and written communication, organizational and problem solving skills.Ability to work both independently and within a team environment. Ability to provide quality service to customers in a courteous, patient manner. Ability to develop and maintain cooperative and productive working relationships. Ability to work various shift patterns dependent upon operational needs. Ability to work in confined spaces and areas with elevated temperatures. Knowledge of welding practices and the ability to assist welders in the fabrication of piping spools. Basic ability to use a smartphone, tablet and PC.
