PhD Research Fellow in geochemical modeling

PhD Research Fellow in Geochemical Modeling – Université d’Oslo

Titre du poste : PhD Research Fellow in geochemical modeling

Entreprise : UNIVERSITETET I OSLO SENTRALADMINISTRASJON

Contexte :

📝 Description du poste : About the positionPosition as PhD Research Fellow in geochemical modeling available at Department of geoscience/FME GigaCCS.Starting date as soon as possible. The fellowship period is three years.A fourth year maybe considered and it will involve 25 percent of other career-promoting work. Other career-promoting work may consist of teaching, supervision, and/or research assistance. This is dependent upon the qualification of the applicant and the current needs of the department. No one can be appointed for more than one PhD Research Fellowship period at the University of Oslo.Job descriptionThe PhD will be part of the new FME GigaCCS centre. The centre will advance Norway’s expertise in CCS, as well as support the global implementation of CCS at a gigatonne scale.
FME GigaCCS seeks a highly motivated candidate for a PhD research fellowship aimed at de-risking CO2 storage in (hyper)saline aquifers. The background is that solid salt is known to form during CO2 storage, potentially leading to permeability
impairment and reduced injectivities. Much research have been done to understand the physics of salt precipitation, but little is known on how geological heterogeneities at various scales affect the extent of salt formation. The project targets modeling formation dry-out and salt precipitation during CO2 storage. The candidate will work on developing numerical models for salt precipitation at pore- to continuum-scale, with special focus on how sedimentary
stratification at various scales affects capillary backflow to the salt-dryout zone. The candidate will work in an interdisciplinary team. There will be a close collaboration between UiO and NORCE, with co-supervision from the latter. What skills are important in this role? The Faculty of Mathematics and Natural Sciences has a strategic ambition to be among Europe’s leading communities for research, education and innovation. Candidates for these fellowships will be selected in accordance with this, and expected to be in the upper segment of their class with respect to academic credentials. We seek a candidate with a demonstrated (a published paper, masters thesis topic, conference presentation, internship or similar) good knowledge on chemical and physical process, especially those involving scale formation (nucleationgrowth of minerals). A geo-scientific knowledge, preferably within stratigraphy and/or geochemistry will be an asset. Qualification requirements:

  • Master’s degree or equivalent in physics, process technology, or computational geosciences
